Monica was one of the three R&B princesses of the late 90s. In 1998 she released her highest-charting single, “Angel of Mine,” for her sophomore project, The Boy is Mine. But did you know the song is actually a cover?

The original singers of the hit single is a British girl group called Eternal and was released the year before Monica covered it. The song became Eternal’s 12th top 10 hit on the UK Singles Chart, peaking at number 4; it spent a total of 13 weeks on the chart.

The Atlanta singer’s version was also a commercial success. It topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart for four weeks, and peaked at number two on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. It was certified platinum by the RIAA in 1999.

Renowned producer, Darkchild, replaced Rhett Lawrence as the producer on Monica’s version. But Lawrence still got them writing credits.

Check out both versions below and let us know which one you like better.
