D.L. Hughley Reveals COVID-19 Diagnosis Following Collapse at Comedy Event

Hospitalized After Collapsing at Comedy Event, Later

Words by Andre Kettle

D.L. Hughley had a medical scare on Friday night. In the middle of his set in a Nashville comedy club, he was seen slurring his words shortly before collapsing and then being carried off the stage by his team.

Hughley appeared at the Zanies Nashville Comedy Club when he paused during the set. In a video that was posted on social media, he then began leaning on his stool. Staff quickly rushed to aid him after sensing trouble, but Hughley continued to collapse and eventually fell to the ground. From there he was quickly rushed off the stage by several staff members into his dressing room. An announcer then instructed the audience to, “Stay calm. We’ve got it all under control.”

According to Billboard, the Nashville event promoted the message of Black empowerment and education and raised money to help combat the spread of the coronavirus. It was a collective effort from many other celebrities such as Snoop Dogg, Anthony Anderson, Master P, and many more.

A representative spoke to TMZ telling them the comedian was “suffering from exhaustion after all the week’s work and travel, and was kept overnight at the hospital for tests under doctor’s orders. He is awake and feeling better, and wishes to thank everyone for the kind prayer and thoughts.”

D.L. Hughley then posted on social media on Saturday night saying he was diagnosed with coronavirus and was being released from a Nashville hospital.

The comedian noted that he was asymptomatic but said in the video, “They ran a battery of tests, and I also tested positive for COVID-19, which blew me away. … Apparently, I just lost consciousness. So, in addition to all the other stuff you have to look out for, if your ass pass out in the middle of a show, onstage, you probably need to get tested.”

Hughley thanks his fans for their support and their “prayer and well wishes.” View the clip here:
