Doja Cat Winning Favorite R&B Artist At American Music Awards Sparked Controversy

Doja Cat Winning Best R&B Category At American Music Awards Sparks Controversy

Cardi B hosted the 49th Annual American Music Awards on Sunday night (Nov. 21). The American Music Awards is a lively night of nonstop music that showcases a strong lineup of first-time collaborations and exclusive world premiere performances from music’s biggest names in Pop, Rap, R&B, Country, Latin, and other genres. Nominees are chosen based on fan engagements evaluated by the Billboard charts, such as streaming, album sales, song sales, and radio airplay. The winners of the American Music Awards are determined entirely by the votes of the public.

However, the AMAs have been criticized after Doja Cat won two R&b awards, which was for ‘Favorite R&B Artist ‘and Favorite R&B Album’ for her 2021 album “Planet Her”. Jazmine Sullivan, H.E.R., Giveon, Queen Naij, and Jhené Aiko were among the vocalists nominated.

Fans wasted no time going on social media to express their disappointments with her being nominated in the wrong category. One fan who tweeted” idk why they keep her in this category knowing damn well she is POP.”

Fans believed that those others artists in that category were robbed of their flowers, as well as how award programs only nominate Black artists for Black-sounding categories, despite the fact that the music they perform is of a different type. Megan Thee Stallion’s won against Drake, Juice WRLD, Pop Smoke, and Rodwave for Favorite Hip Hop Album sparked further controversy.
