Fans React To Alleged ‘Shrek 5’ Release Date Leak

The Internet is in a frenzy following news that Shrek 5 is allegedly releasing in 2025. The release date was announced in a now-deleted LinkedIn job post by a NBCUniversal intern. The young woman claims to have generated consumer product ideas for the film in a screen capture reported by TMZ. It’s unclear if the job post is apart of her marketing strategy, but it has been tweaked since the blow up. This isn’t the first time another Shrek installment has been teased.

Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri said the original cast, including Mike Myers as the ogre Shrek, Cameron Diaz as his princess bride Fiona, and Eddie Murphy as the talkative Donkey, are all down to reprise their roles. NBCUniversal chief Steve Burke talked about his plans for the 2001 movie franchise after his company acquired DreamWorks Animation in 2016. He said, Meledandri “is creatively going to try to help us figure out how to resurrect Shrek and take a lot of the existing DreamWorks franchises and add value as we create new franchises.”

Meledandri is the mind force behind the blockbusters like Despicable Me, Secret Life of Pets, Sing, and he co-produced the smash hit Super Mario Bros. Movie. He previously told Variety, “It’s not that dissimilar to the process that we went through with Mario, where you look at what the core elements are that audiences have loved, and you do your very best to honor those core elements and then you’re hard at work to build story elements and new characters that take you to brand new places. The original cast is a huge part of that.”

The Illumination head honcho also talked about the possibility of a Donkey spin off after Murphy expressed interest and said he’d do another Shrek in “two seconds.” “They did Puss in Boots movies. I was like, ‘They should have did a Donkey movie,'” Murphy told Etalk earlier this year. “Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t funny as the Donkey.” Scroll down to see fans reactions to leak on Twitter:
