Spike Lee Claims Bill Cosby Jacked Idea for 'A Different World' From 'School Daze'

Spike Lee has some words for Bill Cosby. The Oscar-winning film director declared the jailed comic “jacked” his idea from the film School Daze for the popular TV series, A Different World.

The film became relevant again after it became available on Netflix this week. Cosby created and executive produced A Different World, the popular spin-off of The Cosby Show, which was about Denise Huxtable’s, portrayed by Lisa Bonet, life at Hillman College, a fictional HBCU. The Brooklyn native also shared additional info about the movie via Twitter.

The series was released in September 1987, meanwhile, School Daze premiered in February 1988, even though filming for the movie was finished first, according to Lee. Some Twitter users agreed with Lee’s rationale. Others shared that they found both Lee’s film and Cosby’s series equally inspiring.

School Daze was based on Lee’s time as an undergraduate at Morehouse College. The cast included Lee himself, Laurence Fishburn, Bill Nunna and Tisha Campbell, combatting issues such as pledging in Black fraternities and sororities, as well as colorism.

A Different World starred Bonet, Kadeem Hardison, and Jasmine Guy. The show dealt with the issues of apartheid, the Los Angeles Riots along with interracial dating. It aired for six seasons. One thing that can be agreed on is that both were equally monumental in the culture and paved the way for other films and shows.
