Today August 25th marks 20 years since the death of R&B Princess Aaliyah. The “Try Again” singer was 22 years old when she passed away in an airplane accident in the Bahamas in an overloaded plane that also carried 9 other passengers who tragically passed away. Aaliyah had the voice of an angel and her career was ultimately cut short way too fast, she was on her way to the top having just filmed two movies and releasing songs that always made the top charts. 2. “Are You That Somebody” By Aaliyah and Timbaland which was recorded for the 1998 Dr. Doolittle soundtrack, was sampled in the 2013 song “Love Me” by Lil Wayne featuring Drake and Future.
3. 2001’s “Rock The Boat” By: Aaliyah was sampled in the 2016 hit “Fade” by Kanye West featuring Ty Dolla $ign and Post Malone. It also marks history as the last music video Aaliyah made having passed away shortly after filming. It was released posthumously.
4. 1994’s “At Your Best (You Are Love)” by Aaliyah featuring R. Kelly was featured on the soundtrack for the film ATL. It was sampled by Drake in his single” Unforgettable” which featured rapper Jeezy
5. 2001’s “More Than A Woman ” sampled “Alouli Ansa”by Mayada El Hennaway and was sampled by Drake for his 2018 song “Is There More”
6. 1994’s “Age Aint Nothing But A Number” was sampled OutKast for their 2003 song “Pink And Blue”. The song marked the start of controversy regarding Aaliyah’s secret marriage to R Kelly, the marriage was annulled following Aaliyah admitting to having lied about her age.
7. 2001’s “One In A Million” was sampled by the late Nipsey Hussle for his 2010 single “A Million”
8. 1996’s “If Your Girl Only Knew” was sampled by Three 6 Mafia in the 1996 song “Money Flow”. It has been sampled 16 times.
9. 2003’s “Come Over” featured R&B singer Tank as a background singer and was sampled by Kehlani for her song “Can I”. The song originally featured rapper Tory Lanez however Kehlani removed him from the original version following the shooting incident involving Tory and Megan The Stallion.
10. 1997’s “Best Friend” by Aaliyah featuring Missy Elliot was Sampled by rapper J.Cole for his 2018 song “Best Friend”
