Alicia Keys made a pleasant appearance on Drink Champs and shared what JAY-Z told her after Lil Mama infamously crashed their performance during the 2009 VMAs performance.
The singer claims that she didn’t even realize the “Lip Gloss” rapper was on stage with them until it was over, according to a teaser of the upcoming episode.
“The truth of all the truth,” she said. “All I know was on that stage Jay was here [and] I was here. In my head, I was such a gorilla at the time. My eyes – I was like ‘this is what’s happening is – I’m going to destroy this record tonight.’ That’s all I had in my head.”
The “If I Ain’t Got You” singer continued, “Somehow, however [Lil Mama] got over here. I didn’t even bear witness to [it]. The whole show I was ice – so focused on making it amazing. I went backstage and Jay was like ‘so you ain’t see that?’ And I was like ‘what?’ And he was like ‘nah, you ain’t just see what just happened?’ And I was like ‘yeah, we killed it. That’s what just happened.’”
In a previous interview, Alicia Keys made the same claim about being unaware of Lil Mama being on stage with her and JAY-Z while she sang “Empire State of Mind.”
“When I tell you 100 I was oblivious to the idea that next to [Jay-Z] was another person, which kind of scared the sh*t out of me later when I figured it out,” she said.
