Big Freedia was one of the many honorees at the 2021 Ebony 100 gala and she discussed what she contributed to the culture and how she wanted to be remembered.
“The good times. Remember me through the music,” Freedia said. “The music will help them get through and remember that music feeds the soul. That’s why we make music: To feed the soul and nourish it.”
Big Freedia is known for her “Big Diva Energy” and offered advice for how Hip Hop fans can keep that same energy when standing in solidarity with gay Hip Hop figures like Lil Nas X.
“The most important thing is support. Continue to support our peers around us and have their back when these tough times come. Have a shoulder that they can lean on and most importantly, have an open mind. If we keep our minds closed we’ll continue [repeating] history.”
Big Freedia had her own controversy within the Hip Hop community after being visually excluded from Drake’s “Nice For What” despite the Toronto artist using her vocals.
Drake created another New Orleans-themed single, “In My Feelings” and Freedia reached out to him and was invited on set and appeared in the video.
