‘CandyMan’ Grosses $22.3 Million To Become The First #1 Film Directed By a Black Women

CandyMan director Nia DaCosta, has become the first Black female director to have a film debut at #1 on the U.S. box office chart.

Written By the multitalented Jordan Peele who also wrote: Get Out, Us, and now CandyMan for the remake of the 1992 horror film. The film stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen ll, Teyonah Parris, Colman Domingo, and many more.

This film is set in the present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down. Yahya, who plays Anthony, moves to a now gentrified Cabrini that exposes Anthony, a struggling artist, to the true story behind CandyMan which he initially uses as an artistic muse.

The film was initially set to be released on June 12th but due to the Coronavirus, it was postponed until August 27.

Nia DaCosta made history in the process of directing CandyMan.The 31-year-old Brooklyn native will also direct Marvel’s sequel to Captain Marvel. CandyMan’s box office success and DeCosta’s historic accomplishment are especially impressive given how the pandemic affected the film industry and theaters.
