Childish Gambino’s symbolic music video won the Grammy for Best Video at Sunday night’s award ceremony.
Gambino wasn’t present to accept his award. Filmmaker Hiro Murai accepted the award on his behalf and thanked everyone involved in production. He also dedicated the award to Gambino’s father who passed away last year.
Childish Gambino shared the heavy news during a stop on his This Is America Tour. “I lost my father a couple weeks ago, and I wanted to play him some of the new songs,” Glover said in a video shared by a fan on Reddit. “But he didn’t want to hear them because he was like, ‘I know they’ll be great.'”
Gambino’s visuals was received with critical acclaim as it boldly slammed the current political climate of the country,
“This Is America” beat out “Apes–t” by The Carters, “I’m Not Racist” by Joyner Lucas, “PYNK” from Janelle Monáe and “MUMBO JUMBO” by Tierra Whack.
The ‘Invasion of Privacy’ rapper dropped the bomb during an Instagram livestream on Sunday night.
