LEGO Pulls Ads for Police Toys, Donate $4M to Social Justice

Words by Andre Kettle

The LEGO City theme has become a staple in being one of LEGO’s best-selling categories, its law enforcement set is a beloved collection. Police have been at the center of LEGO storytelling beyond toys and across games and animation for years.

So after the murder of George Floyd at the hands of police officers LEGO sent a letter to affiliates requesting a wide range of kits be removed from all sites and marketing. The list featured a number of different kits involving police minifigs, along with the White House.

The toy company quickly explained that none of the kits have actually been canceled. All are still available for sale through the company’s website, along with those LEGO stores that are still open despite the pandemic.

On Wednesday, the company tweeted they’re in solidarity against racism, adding that it will donate $4 million to unspecified nonprofits “dedicated to supporting black children and educating all children about racial equality.”
