After Lil Nas X’s single “Industry Baby” featuring Jack Harlow has reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week . Lil Nas X has now got his own special day in his hometown Atlanta .
Per TMZ, The Atlanta City Council just declared October 20th as Lil Nas X day. Lil Nas X attended a special dinner Wednesday night held at The Gathering Spot, Atlanta. Antonio Brown is the city’s first Black LQBTQ council member.
He awarded Lil Nas X with a commemorating plaque, stating “He has made a considerable impact on the LGBTQ community by reshaping how society accepts LGBTQ artists within the music industry, and empowering others to break barriers and be more open, expressive, and personal through music and art.” And Lil Nas X, I just wanna say you inspire me. I’m running to be the mayor of Atlanta. I would be the first LGBTQ mayor in the history of the city. And you inspire me, allow me to believe I can do it. So thank you.”
Lil Nas thanked Brown and his fellow Atlanta natives for the honor in an acceptance speech. As Lil Nas X accepted the award, he teared up, saying, “I would not have imagined I would be here four years ago … “This is incredible, man, I mean life just keeps getting better. I’m from Atlanta and I’m sure a lot of you probably didn’t even know I was from Atlanta because it’s not something I’m always yelling, but I’m from the A.”
The event was co-sponsored by Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) and the Gilead COMPASS Initiative, which is a 10-year initiative of biopharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences to invest $100 million towards addressing HIV and HIV stigma in the Southern United States. Lil Nas X has frequently used his work to promote queer voices and issues and has worked with Gilead since March.
In a series of Montero interviews with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Nas has also reflected on the album and his journey toward its release. “Music saved my entire life, like all artists say, and I truly get it now,” he goes on. “It gave me an outlet to just have more of a purpose, have something that I want to dedicate myself to, have something I love, have something that I’m not doing for somebody else.”
