Naomi Osaka Advances To Australian Open Finals After Defeating Serena Williams

Naomi Osaka defeated Serena Williams in the Australian Open semifinals.

“I don’t know if there is any little kids out here today but I was a little kid watching her play and just to be on the court playing against her for me is a dream,” Osaka said during an on-court interview after the win. “And I think the biggest thing that I’ve learned over the years is you’re a competitor, you’re playing against another competitor — and that itself is the funnest part because tennis is a game.”

Serena Williams would’ve been a step closer to her 24th Grand Slam title if she won this round. But it was still a win for Black women everywhere.

The 23-year-old handed Williams a 6-3, 6-4 defeat.

Williams’s last Grand Slam title came at the 2017 Australian Open, which she won while two months pregnant with her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian.

Since returning to the court three years ago following a difficult pregnancy which included a C-section delivery stemming from neglected blood clots, the tennis legend played in 11 Grand Slam tournaments.
