Serena Williams and Umpire, Carlos Ramos, to be Separate From Each Other at Australian Open

Words by Andre Kettle

Carlos Ramos, the umpire who Serena Williams accused of being sexist during the US Open final match that took place last Saturday, is reportedly going to be kept away from the tennis star.

“You will never do one of my matches,” Williams said in an outburst during the finals against Naomi Osaka, who went on to win the US Open title. Williams labeled Ramos a thief and a liar for his actions which some people might say caused Williams to lose.

In the final moments against Osaka, Serena was warned after Patrick Mouratoglou, her coach was seen making hand signals in her direction. When she was docked a point for smashing the racket, she scolded the umpire and accused him because “he stole a point.” Williams was then penalized for verbal abuse.

Considering the 23-time grand slam champion Ramos to officially not umpire any of her matches would be something that the federation would look into. But a former professional umpire, Richard Ings said that the umpires will take the lead in these types of situations.

“The player is angry, blames the umpire, says you will never work a match again,” says Ings. “It is obvious that if the umpire does that player in the next match or next week that there will be a problem. So the umpire will simply ask to take a break from umpiring that player.”
