The Inaugural Bedford Stuyvesant Crown Heights Film Festival Celebrates People of Color in Film

It’s film festival season and Brooklyn has joined in on the fun.

The Bedford Stuyvesant Crown Heights Film Festival went down Friday night with a red carpet rollout before the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation (Restoration Plaza).

The free, 2-day event exhibited two features, five short movies, a web series and artist panels to celebrate and recognize people of color in the film business. The premiere night garnered over 200 people at the Billie Holiday Theater at Restoration Plaza.

“I wanted to give artists an opportunity to showcase their work and have a beautiful time in doing so,” said the festival’s co-founder Attika J. Torrence.

Torrence, 46, a fifth-generation Brooklynite, sat down with director, Joseph C. Give Jr. and writer/comedian, Rob Stapleton after the Brooklyn debut of “The Stuff”— a dramatic comedy about two cable technicians who finds themselves in the middle of a drug deal gone wrong. Amid a Q&A, after the screening, the artists uncovered procedures for making the Brooklyn-based film, including closet strategies and finding monetary support for a film made in only 13 days.
