‘Girlfriends’ Creator, Mara Brock Akil, Would Like Closure for Viewers

It’s been a long journey for Mara Brock Akil, the creator of Girlfriends. She has been pushing for funds to do a reboot. The show that everyone loved back in the day that celebrated black women of all shapes, sizes, and status. From a businesswoman to a college student, the show covered different types of situations regarding women. Now, Akil has a new project set to release with OWN, titled Love Is, produced with her husband, Salim Akil and Oprah Winfrey.

Girlfriends was running for eight years but it still ended up being canceled by CW in 2008 with no finale to end the show for the fans. She stated that she would love to get closure for the viewers.

“There’s an audience globally. And to tell the story right . . . probably needs about $40-, $50-, $60 million, but I know what the budget is. Let’s write that check to make hundreds of millions of dollars — but for me to carry that on my back begging people to make it . . . No, I’m not interested.”
