Mary J. Blige Compares Similarities Between Her Power Book II Character, Monet Tejada, And Herself

Mary J. Blige’s most recent role as the Power Book II: Ghost matriarch, Monet Tejada, is nothing like her other roles in Body Cam and the Oscar-nominated film, Mudbound.

“She, by any means necessary, is gonna get what she wants,” the singer said of the earnest character during the red carpet NYC premiere of the second season. “But she has a lot of love in her heart for her children. And by any means necessary, she’s gonna make sure they eat and that they’re safe.”

Her children are seemingly protecting themselves as Monet recoups from a loss in her business while her past haunts her. On the other hand, her nephew Ezekiel Cross is a suspect for murder and she’s trying to figure out how to keep him safe.

When asked if she can resonate with Monet, Mary said, “Of course I can. That’s why I’ve been here doing what I’m doing for so long, cuz by any means necessary, I’m not letting anybody take me down. Anybody make me suffer ever again.”

As per the synopsis, “POWER Book II: Ghost begins its second season with Tariq St. Patrick still running from a legacy that haunts him. Her kids, Dru and Diana, question her moves as she grows more distracted, especially when Monet goes as far as trusting Cane again despite his actions against the family. In doing so, Monet finds herself in bed with Mecca, a man who wants to show her a whole new world, potentially at the cost of destroying her old one. Forcing Monet to lean on Tariq, who must decide what he really wants and what he’s going to sacrifice to get it.”
