Miley Cyrus Settles $300 Million With Jamaican Songwriter for ‘We Can’t Stop’

Miley Cyrus had her culture appropriating phase, and although she has seemingly moved past it, Jamaican songwriter Flourgon is making sure she pays.

Flourgon, born Michael May filed a lawsuit claiming Cyrus’ 2013 hit “We Can’t Stop” jacked lyrics from his 1988 “We Run Things.” The suit argued that the lyric, “We run things, things don’t run we,” too closely resembled his own, “We run things, things no run we.” The singer’s lawyer argued that the lyrics couldn’t even be copy written in the first place because of its origins from the Patois phrase “we run tings, tings nuh run we.”

May, Cyrus, and Sony ended the $300 million lawsuits with prejudice on Friday, therefore it can’t be filed again. Details of the agreement weren’t revealed to the public.

Miley Cyrus hinted at her fans that she’s preparing to drop a new project this year. Wonder what sound she’s going to take on for this decade.
