Sean Paul Talks Negative Impact of Clashing, Clarifies Comments About JAY-Z Being Jealous About Beyonce Collaboration

Sean Paul released his Live N Livin album in March and the star-studded project featured appearances by Busy Signal, Buju Banton, Masicka, Jesse Royal, and Serani.

The 16-track project was produced during the mandated quarantine lockdown in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The Dutty Rock artist wanted to “be the change he wants to see in the universe” so he used this musical collection to deliver a well-needed message to the culture.

In our exclusive virtual interview below, Sean Paul breaks down his “Lion Heart” record where he’s “clashing against the whole culture” and shared his opinion about clashing.

“I don’t really agree. I agree that at this point it holds us back. What it did make us was potent emcees because I had to be ready if anybody would come for me,” he said when asked if he would ever participate in the popular Verzuz series. “But when you look at [me], Shaggy, Koffee, Konshens, Charlie Black, Gyptian, Serani, none of us clashed. And all of us stream amazing numbers. I’m one of the bigger ones so I would beg to differ that clashing actually pushed the whole genre somewhere.”

Elsewhere in the interview, the Dancehall legend clarified previous comments he made that led fans to believe that JAY-Z was jealous of the “Baby Boy” collaboration with Beyonce. “There were incidents that did happen when we were supposed to perform the song that was weird so maybe that started rumors, and they took it and flew with it.

Sean added, “What I was saying was there was the MTV Awards in Europe, the Pro Tools started to skip while we were on stage and millions of people were watching us. It was weird. I never heard of that happening. Pro Tools don’t skip, you have to program it.”

The “Temperature” singer explained another moment that prevented them from performing their hit single. “Also my microphone was off in California we did a Jingle Ball over there for one of these big stations and I couldn’t hear myself because I’m on the stage and they feedback speakers. The crowd couldn’t hear me at all. There were a couple of instances I spoke about and said maybe those things caused rumors. But nothing ever happened [between] me. We did a sexy song and the world loved it.”

Sean Paul ended off on a positive note, sending love to the couple. “I think the two of them are talented, extremely focused, and I have no problem with them just to clear it up on your end.”
