Tyler James Williams Wins First Golden Globe For ‘Abbott Elementary’

Tyler James Williams earned his first Golden Globe award on Tuesday night alongside his “Abott Elementary” castmate Quinta Brunson. The 30-year-old is best known for his role as Chris in the New York-based comedy, “Everybody Hates Chris.”

“Abbott Elementary” is a work-based comedy series about an eager and optimistic new teacher, Jeanine Teagues (played by Quinta Brunson) navigating her way through a new school, and Williams plays her witty coworker, and substitute teacher, Gregory Eddie.

Williams and Brunson first started working together on HBO’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show.” In an interview with Teen Vogue, he revealed that Brunson reached out via DM about “Abbott Elementary.” During his acceptance speech, Williams said, “I love y’all. It’s an honor to work with you every day. I pray that this is a win for Gregory Eddie, and for his story, and for stories like his and that we may understand that his story is just as important as all of the other stories.”

“Abbott Elementary” has been a topic of discussion this award season. Receiving seven Emmy nominations (and two wins), five Golden Globe nominations (three wins), and as of today, nine NAACP Image Awards nominations.
