Fresh off the heels of five inmates getting killed in three different Mississippi state prisons, Yo Gotti joined forces with Roc Nation to urge the governor to take action.
Gotti teamed up with the philanthropic arm of Roc Nation, Team Roc, and wrote a letter to Gov. Phil Bryant. The letter made it clear that they plan to take legal action if Bryant doesn’t take the right steps to improve prison conditions.
Team Roc wrote to the Governor, that male and female inmates are “forced to live in squalor, with rats that crawl over them as they sleep on the floor, having been denied even a mattress for a cot.” They argue that the conditions are so bad that they violate the Eighth Amendment.
The Eighth Amendment to the United States Constitution states: “Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.”
Two of the deaths happened at Parchman Farm, near the rapper’s hometown of Memphis. Gotti says the prison conditions are “absolutely inhumane and unconstitutional.”
Prison violence has increased within the past week, and some reports suggests that gangs have taken over some of the penitentiaries which are under staffed.
Sources close to Yo Gotti reportedly told TMZ that they’re giving Bryant the weekend to rectify the situation, otherwise Alex Spiro is ready to fire off a civil rights lawsuit.
The ‘Invasion of Privacy’ rapper dropped the bomb during an Instagram livestream on Sunday night.
