Ashanti sat down with Angie Martinez on Power 105.1 on November 15 to discuss her choice to re-record her debut album, saying she wants to demonstrate her audience the value of ownership when it comes to art. When Ashanti’s self-titled debut album, co-produced by Irv Gotti, released at number one in 2002, it was a big hit.
When Martinez asked Ashanti about a potential release date, the singer explained that she has her sights set on her Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony in April, hoping that the press are ready for “the new Ashanti.” The thinking behind that is showing the business side of ownership,” Ashanti said of her decision. “And how important it is to own. And once I re-record the first album, [I own it]. she said before later continuing, “So everything purchased, like when that goes, everything purchased from that moment I own.”
Irv Gotti didn’t agree with Ashanti decision he posted underneath the clip on instagram claiming that Ashanti was trying to steal back her masters, which he apparently owns.
