After Rev. Raphael Warnock won the Senate race in Georgia, Lebron James is thinking of putting together an ownership group to buy the WNBA team, the Atlanta Dream, from its co-owner and senator Kelly Loeffler.
“Think I’m gone put together an ownership group for The Dream. Whose in? #BlackVotesMatter✊🏾,” the former Cavaliers star tweeted after Atlanta Dream co-owner Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) lost her seat to Democrat Raphael Warnock in Tuesday’s runoff election.
Rev. Raphael Warnock is Georgia’s first black senator. He’s also the first Black Democrat to serve a southern state as Senator. Warnock won by beating republican Kelly Loeffler who is also the co-owner of Atlanta’s Dream WNBA team.
Loeffler has sparked controversy in the league by stating she does not support the Black Lives Matter movement. In addition, Loeffler has called for the separation of politics in pro sports. Her lack of support for the BLM movement led to players calling for her to sell her share of the team. Since her refusal, in the days leading up to the senate election in Georgia displayed their opposition. As seen in Lebron James tweet, several players of the Dream team were photographed wearing “Vote Warnock” shirts, which honors Reverend Raphael Warnock.
Above all, Kelly Loeffler may be out of office but the moment to kick her out of the league still goes on. LeBron James seems to be the best candidate to do so. With his values and activism in social justice and politics, James could be next in line to own the Atlanta Dream team.
