Steven Victor on Pop Smoke’s Murder Investigation: ‘It’s Definitely Way, Way Closer Than it Was a Couple Months Ago’

Pop Smoke’s posthumous debut album is the talk of the town. Thanks to his estate, 50 Cent, and his manager, Steven Victor, Pop’s vision for his freshman collection became a reality five months after his death.

Victor virtually appeared on EBro Darden’s Beats 1 radio show and provided an update on the late rapper’s murder investigation. Previous reports suggested that the COVID-19 pandemic and lack of cooperation was slowing down the case. Victor said, “I don’t know how much I can say. … It’s way closer. I’m getting information from Pop’s criminal attorney, and he’s in communication with LAPD and detectives out there. So it’s definitely way, way closer than it was a couple months ago.”

Victor and Darden were joined by Fifty in the video above, who served as executive producer of the project, and they dissected the LP’s intro, “Bad B*tch From Tokyo.” The rap veteran recalled advising the Brooklyn Drill rapper that when he writes about death, to “write it away from you.” On the song, Pop raps, “I looked my killer in his eyes, yeah, I’m talkin’ face-to-face.” Unfortunately, the song was written before 50’s advice according to Victor.

Pop Smoke was taken from the world on February 19th after four hooded men entered his Beverly Hills home and gunned him down. The “Dior” rapper suffered two gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon is a glimpse of what the 20-year-old had to offer and we have to cherish it because it was special. Stream the album below:
